Brasov, as it is!

Historical vestiges

I will present the city in this page, in order to highlight at least some of the beauties and opportunities of fun in Brasov. img1By looking forward to convince you to become inhabitants of Brasov after reading this page, I will start with the historical attractions.

Graft Bastion, erected during the 15th century, defended and maintained on the cost of the saddle-makers guild, used to make the connection between the White Tower and the defence system of the walled city. During the 16th century a defence wall with eight towers was built in this area and it was also then that the Graft Canal was dug to drain the water running down the slopes of Warthe Hill. After the floods in 1809, the fortified foundations weakened, and the walls were propped up on supporting arches.

The Weavers Bastion, a monument of Medieval architecture situated in the south-western corner of the img2medieval walled city, was erected at the expense and defended through the care of the weavers in the city. Attested in documents since 1522, it is the best-preserved fortification of the city, nowadays hosting a Museum of the Medieval City of Brasov. In the exhibition area of the Weavers Bastion, alongside a valuable collection of medieval weapons (spreading on about 40 square meters), a model of the late 15th century walled city delights the visitors eyes.

Catherine's Gate is the best-preserved access gate to the walled-city. It was erected in 1559 at the expense of Magistrate Johannes Beckner.img4 It was the main gate of the medieval walled city providing access from the Schei Quarter and playing the role of a corner bastion.

Schei Gate it was built between 1827 and 1828 with the contribution of the merchants in Schei to facilitate the access from the Romanian quarter into the walled city.

The Black Tower was built during the 14th century. On June 23, 1559 it was struck by lightening and it burnt, thus getting the name that it still bears today. One can visit the collection of cold steel and fire arms displayed in the precincts of the Black Tower.

img5
Rope Street (Strada Sforii) was built during the early 13th century. It is the only street whose side-walls can be touched with both hands at the same time.

Religious buildings

The Orthodox Synagogue. In 1877 a new community of orthodox (traditionalist) faith was constituted, which built the Synagogue in Castelului St. The Synagogue was ravaged by the legionnaires (ultra-nationalist anti-semitic, fascist movement and political party in Romania in the period from 1927 into the early part of World war II) during World War II.

On the north-western side of the Council Square rises the imposing Black Church (Biserica Neagra). img6It used to be called St. Marys Church from 1385, when the construction works began, to the fire in 1689. After the fire, due to the colour of the blackened outer walls, it received the name of The Black Church and it is known as a symbol of the Transylvanian Gothic art. Remarkable from this point of view are the 5 portals made during the late 15th century, very richly decorated, specific of the last stage of the Gothic art and representative of the flamboyant style of the central and eastern Europe. The church shelters the largest and most valuable collection of Oriental rugs (over 100). The pews constitute another element of patrimony of the Black Church, together with the renowned 4000-pipe organ, that was installed in 1839.

Attested in documents in 1292, mentioned in the papal bull of 1399, St. Nicolas Church was built of stone from 1495 onwards with the support of the voivodes from across the mountains (Vlad the Monk, Neagoe Basarab, Michael the Brave, Petru Cercel, Prince Aron, Gheorghe Stefan and others), later winning three more service chapels. img7The church has Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, its art being in fact a synthesis of all these styles under Byzantine influence. Nicolae Titulescu (1882-1941), former Romanian Minister of the Foreign Affairs, was buried here in accordance with his testamentary will. St. Nicolas Church was renewed during the inter-war period through the care of the locals and it still preserves frescos painted by the celebrated painter Misu Pop.

The Roman Catholic Cathedral. Built in baroque style, the church dates from 1776-1782. It was erected on the very spot where once stood the Dominican monastery “Saints Peter and Paul”.

The Franciscan Friary. This architectural complex dating from around 1500 B.C. was restored between the 16th - 18th centuries. The church and the Cloister have been preserved. img8The old Gothic portal and some decorative elements in baroque style are easy to remark.

St. Bartholomew Church. The building works started in 1223, making this church the oldest construction in Brasov County. The architectural style preserves early Roman and Gothic elements. The existing tower was erected in 1842 to replace the original one, which had collapsed in 1833.

Cultural institutions

On the spot where Baiulescu House (Casa Baiulescu) stands today the Strap Makers Bastion was built in the 15th century. img9It was flanked from behind the city walls by the Strap Makers Bastion and from Vamii Street (nowadays Muresenilor St.) by the Furriers Tower. In 1887 the Strap Makers Bastion was sold and demolished. Manole Diamandi built a villa on the very same spot, which he offered as a wedding present to his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Gheorghe Baiulescu, the first Romanian mayor of Brasov.
Several cultural centres currently function in this building:

  • George Baritiu Multicultural Centre, which develops cultural programs and promotes the intercultural dialogue.
  • The English Library.
  • The French Cultural Centre.

Sica Alexandrescu Theatre. The Theatre was inaugurated in 1946 under the name The State Theatre. In 1968, Mr. Sica Alexandrescu, Stage Director and Manager of the institution, changed its name into The Drama Theatre. Being a repertory theatre, it currently functions in an edifice that was inaugurated in 1959. img10It has two spectacle halls: the large hall, with 750 seats and the small hall, Studio 82, with a capacity of 60 seats.

Arlechino Children's Theatre. Arlechino's Theatre was set-up in 1949 and it performed within the Drama Theatre for a while. In 1991 it became an independent professional institution.

The Brasov Philharmonic Community (Kronstadter Philharmonische Gesellschaft) originally used to be the musical community of the Saxons, but it was open to the whole population of the city, regardless of nationality.
This intercultural openness manifested itself in the collaboration with conductors and artists of Romanian nationality and with chorus-groups of Saxon, Romanian and Hungarian nationality, and last but not least, through the presentation of works by composers from Brasov.
With the occasion of its first concert held on the 6th of May 1878 the Brasov Philharmonic Community presented the Overture of W. A. Mozarts opera, The Magic Flute and L. V. Beethovens VI. Symphony under the guidance of the famous conductor Anton Brandner who was known as one of the founding fathers and the first conductor of the Community.
The talent and greatness of the musicians of the Philharmonic has been proven by the success of the concerts with such world-famous conductors as Ferenc Liszt, Ciprian Porumbescu and George Enescu.

Museums and memorial houses

The Museum of the First Romanian School. Built in 1495, the First Romanian School preserves elements of the Baroque style from the changes that were brought to it between 1760 and 1761. Between 1557 and 1583 Deacon Coresi printed 17 titles in Romanian and Slavonic here, on paper made in a factory in Brasov City.

The Ethnography Museum of Brasov City is consecrated to the regional ethnology of south-eastern Transylvania, to the civilization of the rural communities in the area of Bran, Rupea, Olt Land and Barsa Land.
From an administrative point of view, the Ethnography Museum is organized in three different locations: Brasov, Sacele and Rupea. img11A rich permanent exhibition is organized in the central pavilion of Brasov. The exhibition treats briefly of an occupation common of all the ethnographic areas: the craft of weaving and its functional applications in the organization of homes and in popular costumes. The presentation has a pronounced pedagogical character, with stress laid on the reconstitution of the authenticity of the rural context by means of tools, technologies and specific products.

The citadel had four towers, and it could be entered on a draw-bridge. img17The Gothic portals, the narrow staircases (some of which secret) carved right in the stone, vaulted halls, archways and other architectural elements make it a most exquisite and impressive ensemble.
